Glossary Of IT Terms
Bandwidth
The capacity of the transmission medium stated in bits per second.
examples: 10Mbps,100Mbps, 1000Mbps.
Database
A structured collection of records or data that is stored in a computer system, usually a server. A database usually contains software so that a person or program can use it to answer queries or extract desired information.
Gateway
A router used to connect a private network to a public network, typically the Internet.
Hub
A device for connecting multiple twisted pair or fibre optic Ethernet devices together, making them act as a single segment.
Network
Multiple computers connected together using communication equipment for the purpose of sharing data.
PC (Desktop computer)
Personal Computer.
Router
A device that attaches to two or more networks and routes packets from one network to the other. Routers send packets to other routers until they arrive at their final destination.
Server
An application program that accepts connections in order to service requests by sending back responses.
examples: file server, print server, backup server.
Spam (Junk Mail,UCE,UBE)
Spam is indiscriminately sent unsolicited bulk messages. Email is the most widely recognized form of spam, it also refers to other media such as instant messages, SMS ,forums blogs and wikis.
Switch
A device to connect LANs or segments of the same media access type
UCE
Unsolicited Commercial Email is the most common form of Spam.
Workstation
High-end computer, generally higher performance than a regular pc.
Routing
Routing is the act of moving information across a network from a source to a destination.
